Velocity and Preparation of Strokes
Velocity, preparation of strokes, and a loose grip are the three most important concepts in drumming.
By understanding the 4 types of strokes (full, down, up, and tap), I will attain greater speed and flow because I’m prepared for the next stroke sooner.
I use velocity (throwing the stick quickly) to get volume instead of using muscle, and I hold my sticks loosely instead of gripping tightly. I actually have more control over my playing with a loose grip as it gives me better flow with less fatigue.
These are techniques that I learned from having studied with Joe Morello for 6 years, and these are the techniques I have taught for the past 40 years.
