The VIC FIRTH HINGESTIX® are for learning MATCHED GRIP. That is, both hands hold the stick in the same manner (unlike TRADITIONAL GRIP, where the left hand holds the drumstick in the ‘traditional” Jazz or marching (military) style.
Matched grip is easier to learn as both hands are doing the same thing. It is also more practical as making the switch to the percussion mallet instruments (xylophone, marimba) or timpani require that you play this way.
HingeStix® are great for learning:
- Single strokes using the rebound. Like bouncing a basketball, the HingeStix® simulate a loose grip where bouncing becomes easier.
- Learning the double bounce for your “open” roll. Just throw the stick down once and let the stick bounce free for that 2nd stroke.
- Learning the all important “buzz” stroke for your long or “closed” roll. Throw the stick down while pressing down (but not so much as to choke the buzz). Leave it on the drumhead to make the buzz last as long as you can. This will elongate your buzzes so you can roll slower and not get the strain that rolling fast can sometimes cause.
