I read somewhere that in an interview, Max Weinberg of Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band said a person learning the drums should start with at least a year on a practice pad before even approaching the kit! Maybe slightly extreme but my research does keep returning me to the fact that without a thorough knowledge of technique and the rudiments you will never amount to anything on a kit.
Realistically, I start my students on the drum kit right away just so they can get the feel of it and to see what fun it is. But you must get with a good teacher and learn hand technique properly. If not, bad habits are bound to creep up which will limit your playing ability and lead to frustration.
Have you found anything that can help me through this process quickly?
You can check out the Vic Firth HingeStix. There are videos on YouTube where you can see them in action. They look like a great tool to help anyone with their grip and technique – even drummers who have been playing for decades.
